Responsibilities

  • Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck to haul material and equipment to and from the job site, including picking up material from vendor; ensures tarp is in place and that all loose material is removed from sides of the truck.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on truck daily, including checking air, oil, fluids, and that all lights are in working order; keeps record of this same information.
  • Works with a crew in the installation of sideline, cross line, and driveway pipe; cleans out ditches with a shovel and levels ditch line before placing pipe; ensures all pipe is laid to allow water to flow properly and that the pipe is sealed; dresses area before leaving the job site; ensures that all extra material and tools are picked up and placed back on truck.
  • Operates the Injection Patcher (trailer mounted) in a safe and efficient manner; ensures proper preventive maintenance is done in accordance with SCDOT Fleet Safety and manufacturer’s operation manual.
  • Patches potholes by cutting out area, adding tack and asphalt, then tamping for a good seal; paves driveways and turning lanes using good techniques; uses shovel and other hand tools to ensure the area is level and that all loose material has been removed.
  • Operates a 5-yard and 8-yard dump truck and trailer to haul material and equipment to and from the job site, including picking up material from vendor; ensures tarp is in place and that all loose material is removed from sides of the truck; performs preventive maintenance on truck daily and keeps record of this same information.
  • Sets up traffic control devices such as cones and signs for work zone safety to the South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; flags traffic according to standards ensuring that all safety attire is worn at all times.
  • Clears right-of-way by hand using axe, sling blade, and chainsaw, including removing dead trees and limbs.
  • Operates medium to heavy equipment during emergencies and/or hazardous weather.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

Work Environment

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Additional Information

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
