Highway Maintenance Worker II: Heavy Equipment Operator (61036075) **RE-ADVERTISEMENT**

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment on the Light Vegetation Crew, including but not limited to: Backhoe, Excavator, Front End Loader, Lowboy Truck, Motor Grader, Slope Mower, and Tractor with Ditcher.
• Performs maintenance work such as residential driveway installation, repair, relocation, and regular maintenance; clearing of right-of-way; drainage structures; crossline pipe repair; signs; debris removal; and related tasks.
• Instructs crewmembers daily in safety practices, including flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, and handling job site hazards.
• Assists in constructing traffic control operations for work zones, including lane closures and detours, to ensure the safety of the crew and the traveling public.
• Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
• Assists in on-call operations for after-hours emergencies, Snow and Ice Plan, and Hurricane Lane Reversal Plan.
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium and heavy-duty equipment, and may be required to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

• Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
