Highway Maintenance Worker II: Heavy Equipment Operator (61036317) **RE-ADVERTISEMENT**

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains heavy motorized equipment (e.g., backhoe, excavator, front-end loader, truck-mounted road patcher) in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the State highway system.
• Performs skilled manual labor in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges, including constructing and repairing drainage structures, machining and grading dirt roads within Dorchester County.
• Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists.
• Performs manual labor such as patching potholes and base surface failures using electric/gas-powered tools and hand tools (e.g., drills, jacks, concrete saw, pavement breakers, air compressor, sprayers, shovel, asphalt lute).
• Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium-duty equipment and being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

• Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
