Highway Maintenance Worker II: Heavy Equipment Operator (61035918) **RE-ADVERTISEMENT**

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, motor grader, etc. for road maintenance activities.
• Performs manual labor or operates equipment in maintenance tasks including:
  • Clearing right-of-ways
  • Cleaning and grading drainage ditches
  • Repairing shoulders and patching potholes
  • Making base repairs
  • Paving driveways
  • Laying pipes
  • Building catch basins
  • Pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks, and raised medians
• Operates 5 and 10 yard dump trucks to haul construction materials such as concrete pipes, asphalt, dirt, limestone, soil, cement, and debris.
• Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws, and uses hand tools in maintenance activities.
• Assists in instructing crew members on safety practices including flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, and handling hazardous materials.
• Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations, which may require working outside normal work schedules.
• When crew is in an "on-call" status, is available 24 hours a day.
• Assists in setting up work zone traffic control including signs and cones.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow and protect workers, the public, and equipment.

Requirements

• One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

• Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or departmental-related emergencies.
• Frequent exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
