Responsibilities
- Operates and maintains an excavator with a specialized tree-cutting attachment throughout the district.
- Performs extended tree removal and mulching using a 25-ton excavator on uneven, wet, and sloped terrain with a 3-ton fixed-tooth cutting head capable of handling any size tree.
- Operates the excavator adjacent to live traffic on interstates and primary and secondary routes.
- Loads and operates a semi-truck/tractor-trailer to transport wide-load motorized equipment.
- Conducts safety inspections (preventive maintenance) on all assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Produces daily records of work performed and materials used, including HMMS and request/complaint forms.
- Sets up traffic control according to SCMUTCD standards to warn motorists of road work ahead.
- Assists in emergency operations when on-call after hours, weekends, holidays, or during inclement weather, snow and ice events, hazardous road conditions, and accidents.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One (1) year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
- Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirements
- Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
- May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor environments in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease.
