Job Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, excavator, motor grader, etc., used in various road maintenance activities.
  • Performs various duties including manual labor or operating equipment in such maintenance tasks as clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning and grading drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, paving driveways, laying pipes, building catch basins and pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks and raised medians.
  • Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chains saws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various maintenance activities.
  • May instruct crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety and when working with hazardous materials and waste.
  • Assists in setting up work zone traffic control to include signs, cones, etc.
  • Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment.
  • Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule.
  • When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement

  • The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
