Highway Maintenance Worker I Small Equipment Operator (61035669)

Responsibilities

• Pick up litter, debris, and dead animals from interstates, primary, and secondary routes in Lee County.
• Operate a dump truck and perform manual labor related to the construction, repair, and preservation of roads on the state highway system.
• Operate a brush chipper and perform manual labor for road construction, repair, and preservation.
• Perform vegetation management activities using powered hand tools.
• Assist with the placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serve as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating small equipment.
• May be required to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Requirements

• No minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

• Essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and emergencies.

Additional Information

• May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
