About the role
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) seeks a Highway Maintenance Worker to ensure state highways are safe and drivable.
Responsibilities
- Perform roadway maintenance activities
- Perform roadside activities
- Install and replace signs, permanent traffic control devices, and pavement markings
- Maintain and repair guardrail systems
- Perform structure maintenance and repair activities
- Respond to emergencies and other incidents
- Provide on-the-job training and work direction
- Provide temporary traffic control through and around work zones and emergency/hazardous sites
- Maintain documentation
- Operate and use a variety of equipment and tools
- Promote a safe work environment and participate in public safety awareness activities
Requirements
- Valid driver license
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of hire date
- Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and no restrictions
- Willingness to work night and shift work, including weekends and holidays
- Ability to lift up to 90 pounds occasionally and 35 pounds routinely
- High standards of ethical conduct
- Work cooperatively with others
- Display a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals
Qualifications
- Experience in the operation of heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment
- Experience in heavy construction (preferred)
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques used to perform road maintenance activities (desirable but not required)
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance methods such as changing oil, rotating tires, and lubricating parts (desirable but not required)
- Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide)
- Basic computer operation (desirable but not required)
Skills
- Use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools
- Operate, maintain, and repair various equipment and attachments
- Drive and operate a manual transmission

Pay
The total compensation for a typical year for entry level Highway Maintenance Worker is approximately $67,003.00 annually.
Schedule
- From approximately May 1 to September 30, the anticipated work schedule is 10-hour days, 4 days per week, from Monday through Thursday each week.
- From approximately October 1 - April 30, the anticipated work schedule is eight-hour days, Monday through Friday.
- Night and shift work will be required, including working weekend hours and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather.
