About the role
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking multiple skilled, safety-focused Highway Maintenance Workers to join their team in Monroe and Everett, WA. This role involves performing a wide range of highway maintenance and repair activities, operating specialized equipment, and responding to emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations.
- Operate Class A, B, and/or C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) List for highway maintenance.
- Drainage maintenance and repair to include catch basins, culverts, pipes, ponds, sedimentation facilities, swales, ditches, and other types of drainage features.
- Install, maintain, and repair guardrail, fences, impact attenuator concrete barriers and other safety features.
- Aid in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts using a variety of equipment and tools.
- Remove dangerous trees; provide vegetation management, such as mowing, applying pesticides; establishing, maintaining, and repairing landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.
- Transport up to 50 lbs. of heavy equipment and materials between work sites, such as rip rap, hot and cold asphalt, removes litter, dead animals, and debris from state rights-of-way.
- Track, document, and report daily work activities into computerized systems (e.g., Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work Zone Data base (WZDB), Traffic Sign Management System (TSMS)).
- Prepare and complete third-party damage estimates (i.e., K3) through computerized systems.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in highway maintenance practices, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
- Licenses: Possess an unrestricted Class A CDL with “N” endorsement without air brake restriction & valid medical card.
- Equipment Operation: Ability to operate and maintain various Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles following WSDOT standards.
- Knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
- Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
- Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS).
- Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
- Teamwork & Leadership: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field.

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of traffic control principles, practices, and procedures in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Certifications: Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License, Backflow Prevention Tester Certification, Crane Certification.
