About the role
Assist in the maintenance of all County and State Highways where assigned. The current vacancy will be based in Iron River, WI.
Responsibilities
- Roadway maintenance and construction.
- Roadside drainage operations.
- Mowing and brushing operations.
- Hauling materials for maintenance and construction.
- Plowing snow and ice removal operations.
- Maintain cleanliness and maintenance of highway department buildings, grounds and equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of highway operations including the operation of mower tractors, front end-loaders, motorgraders, chipper, chain saws, brush saws, and various size trucks from pickup to quad-axle dump trucks.
- Must produce an accurate account of all materials used, time expended and machinery used in each area of work accomplished.
- Must have knowledge of or ability to handle various manual tasks from pavement maintenance, roadside drainage, shoulder maintenance, and the operation of snow and ice removal equipment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public.
- Knowledge of and experience using personal protective equipment and safety gear.
Other Qualifications
- Must possess or obtain within 60 days of employment a State of Wisconsin CDL Class A driver's license with air brake endorsement.
- Telephone or pager device as all employees are subject to 24 hour call-out.
- At least 3 years previous experience in road construction and maintenance preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Successfully pass a physical examination, CDL drug and alcohol screening.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Get in and out of equipment.
- Able to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb down banks.
- Ability to push wheelbarrow up slopes.
- Ability to shovel, pound and level various materials.
- Ability to work in diverse weather conditions including heat, heavy rain, ice and snow.
- Visual ability requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color vision.
- Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
- Noise level in the work environment is generally moderate to loud.
- Work in inclement weather.
