About the role

Assist in the maintenance of all County and State Highways where assigned. The current vacancy will be based in Iron River, WI.

Responsibilities

  • Roadway maintenance and construction.
  • Roadside drainage operations.
  • Mowing and brushing operations.
  • Hauling materials for maintenance and construction.
  • Plowing snow and ice removal operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and maintenance of highway department buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of highway operations including the operation of mower tractors, front end-loaders, motorgraders, chipper, chain saws, brush saws, and various size trucks from pickup to quad-axle dump trucks.
  • Must produce an accurate account of all materials used, time expended and machinery used in each area of work accomplished.
  • Must have knowledge of or ability to handle various manual tasks from pavement maintenance, roadside drainage, shoulder maintenance, and the operation of snow and ice removal equipment.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public.
  • Knowledge of and experience using personal protective equipment and safety gear.

Other Qualifications

  • Must possess or obtain within 60 days of employment a State of Wisconsin CDL Class A driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Telephone or pager device as all employees are subject to 24 hour call-out.
  • At least 3 years previous experience in road construction and maintenance preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successfully pass a physical examination, CDL drug and alcohol screening.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Get in and out of equipment.
  • Able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb down banks.
  • Ability to push wheelbarrow up slopes.
  • Ability to shovel, pound and level various materials.
  • Ability to work in diverse weather conditions including heat, heavy rain, ice and snow.
  • Visual ability requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color vision.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Noise level in the work environment is generally moderate to loud.
  • Work in inclement weather.
