About the role

The West Ham United Foundation, in partnership with the University of East London (UEL), is seeking an inspiring Higher Education Lecturer to deliver the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching & Performance degree. This role blends academic teaching with applied sport, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and experience for careers in coaching and performance. You will report to the HE Programme Manager, delivering engaging learning, supporting student success, and embedding real-world practice throughout the programme.

We welcome applicants with expertise in areas such as sports coaching and coach development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, talent identification, skill acquisition, sports psychology, applied sport science, coach education, research methods, leadership, athlete development pathways, performance lifestyle, and the use of technology in coaching and performance. Experience in professional sport, higher education, or elite performance environments is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and practical workshops.
  • Design engaging teaching materials and assessments aligned to academic and industry standards.
  • Provide tutorials, feedback, and one-to-one academic support.
  • Review and develop module content to ensure quality and relevance.
  • Build positive, inclusive relationships with students and monitor engagement, progress, and achievement.
  • Provide academic and pastoral support, promoting placements, coaching opportunities, and professional development.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain current knowledge of research and best practice in sports coaching and performance.
  • Undertake relevant CPD and maintain professional memberships where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with WHUF and UEL colleagues to support Open Days, outreach, and taster sessions.
  • Ensure safeguarding, health & safety, and quality standards are met.

Requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification in Sports Coaching, Sport Science, or a related discipline.
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work toward HEA Fellowship.
  • Safeguarding and First Aid certification.
  • Experience teaching within Higher or Further Education.
  • Experience designing and delivering engaging, inclusive learning.
  • Practical experience within sports coaching or performance environments.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.

  • Strong planning, organization, and time management.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Confident using data to inform teaching and measure impact.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office, Moodle, and online learning platforms.
  • Current subject expertise with an understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and health & safety.

Pay

Up to £35,000 (Enhanced DBS required).
