About the role
The High School Work Study (HSWS) Program is a highly competitive paid part-time internship for high school juniors who plan to participate in a school-sponsored Work Experience Program during their senior year. Students gain hands-on work experience in business and computer-related roles from September through August, working 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week, Monday–Friday. The program includes a security clearance, part-time salary, paid leave, and the potential for permanent employment upon successful completion.
Responsibilities
- Office Assistant: Type, file, maintain records, answer phones, and operate business equipment such as word processors and personal computers.
- Computer Aide: Operate data processing equipment, including sophisticated systems, with tasks tailored to students in STEM-focused courses or those who have completed technical computer courses.
Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age by 31 December 2026.
- Must be eligible to be granted a Security Clearance.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher is preferred.
- Must be a high school junior.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must complete at least two Business or Technical Computer courses prior to the end of the junior year (preferred Business courses: Microsoft Applications, Keyboarding, Software Applications, Advanced Applications, Computer Skills for Academic Success; preferred Technical Computer courses: Computer Science, Visual Basic, Java, Web Page Design, Intro to Engineering, Programming C++).
- Applicants who have not completed one of these courses will not be considered.
- Positions are available only in San Antonio, TX, and students must reside within commuting distance.
Qualifications
- Office Assistant: Must complete a minimum of one business or non-technical computer course (e.g., Microsoft Applications, Keyboarding, Software Applications, Advanced Applications, Computer Skills for Academic Success) prior to the end of the junior year.
- Computer Aide: Must complete a minimum of two technical computer courses (e.g., Computer Science, Visual Basic, Java, Web Page Design, Intro to Engineering, Programming C++).
Completion of required courses will be verified on the transcript at the end of the junior year.
Pay
Students are paid approximately $15.00 per hour in Texas, on a Grade 01 Step 01 scale.
Schedule
- Part-time schedule of 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
- Possible shifts: 7:00 AM–11:00 AM or 11:00 AM–3:00 PM, with some flexibility to accommodate individual needs.
- Students earn Annual Leave and Sick Leave at a rate of one hour for every twenty hours worked.
