Responsibilities
- Teach critical reading strategies, literary analysis, and informational/argumentative text analysis.
- Explain how to analyze author purpose, evaluate argument validity, interpret figurative language, and synthesize multiple texts.
- Prepare students for AP courses, SAT/ACT reading sections, and college readiness.
- Guide students through close reading, annotation, and analytical response construction for complex texts.
- Help students interpret poetry and prose, evaluate rhetorical strategies in nonfiction, identify logical fallacies, and synthesize ideas across sources.
- Develop independent critical reading skills and connect reading analysis to persuasive writing and informed citizenship.
- Adapt instruction using diverse text selections, scaffolded annotation guides, and discussion-based analysis.
- Identify and address common student struggles with comprehension, archaic language, unfamiliar genres, and sustained focus.
- Use multiple teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs and styles.
Requirements
- Deep knowledge of high school reading standards and challenges (e.g., text complexity, archaic language, genre unfamiliarity).
- Ability to teach close reading, annotation, and analytical response construction for complex texts.
- Familiarity with adapting instruction for diverse learners, from struggling to advanced students.
- Strong communication skills and an engaging, adaptive teaching style.
- Experience explaining material using multiple approaches to address different learning needs.
