About the role
The Springfield Public Schools seeks a highly qualified educator with a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities license to teach in grades 5-12. This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree with the appropriate license, or a Master’s Degree with the appropriate content area license preferred.
Responsibilities
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in designated locations and times.
- Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of students.
- Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
- Guides the learning process towards achieving established district curriculum goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to students, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with physical limitations and student capabilities.
- Strives to implement the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals.
- Affords assessments of student accomplishments regularly, provides progress reports as required, and communicates with parents as necessary.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Determines the learning challenges of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as needed.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Fulfills the district's code of conduct for the classroom, consistent with administrative policies and develops classroom behavior rules enforced fairly and justly.
- Plans and supervises assignments for paraprofessionals, and makes written evaluations as required.
- Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements and personal expectations.
- Participates in the contractually-approved teacher evaluation process, contributing to a mutual agreement concerning the results of the evaluation.
- Attends building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision-making among staff; attends traditional school-sponsored activities as agreed upon by the building administrator and faculty.
- Contributes to decisions made by the district and building regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well-being.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
Qualifications
- Highly qualified with required competency in the content area.
- Appropriate content/program area educator license (Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities) and grade level (5-12) licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate license; or Master’s Degree with appropriate content area license preferred and/or expected within 5 years.
