Responsibilities
- Teach literary analysis across genres, rhetoric and argumentation, research writing, grammar and style, and vocabulary development.
- Explain literary devices, rhetorical strategies, MLA citation, and thesis-driven essay construction.
- Prepare students for AP English courses, SAT/ACT English sections, and college composition.
- Guide students in close reading, analytical essay writing, and research methodology.
- Help students interpret complex literature, construct thesis-driven arguments, evaluate source credibility, and write research papers with proper documentation.
- Develop critical thinking through textual analysis and connect English skills to college readiness, professional communication, and civic participation.
- Adapt instruction using mentor texts, essay workshops, and discussion-based analysis for students from general English through honors and AP levels.
- Identify and address common student struggles using multiple teaching approaches tailored to individual learning needs.
Requirements
- Deep knowledge of high school English curricula, including state standards and AP course frameworks.
- Familiarity with common student challenges such as moving beyond summary to analysis, developing sophisticated thesis statements, and integrating textual evidence effectively.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
