About the role

Communities in Sierra Leone are seeking aspiring and experienced teachers to support high school students in achieving academic success for a promising future. One of the greatest challenges in Sierra Leone’s education system is ensuring young people stay engaged and supported, particularly in communities with limited resources and technology. A recent survey found that nearly one in four children between the ages of 6 and 18 was not attending school, and two-thirds of those out-of-school children had never enrolled. Students who do attend face barriers such as extensive household responsibilities, long walks to school, hunger, exhaustion, and a lack of emotional support at home, which can impact their self-esteem and confidence.

Education has become a national priority, and communities are working with renewed energy to create brighter opportunities for youth. As a High School English and STEM Teacher, you will collaborate with Sierra Leonean educators to develop and implement effective teaching strategies, ensuring all students feel supported and challenged. Together, you’ll facilitate student-centered activities, develop classroom resources, and nurture a positive reading culture. Your efforts will elevate students’ achievements and contribute to the country’s growth.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with teachers to incorporate research-based teaching practices.
• Prepare lesson plans that expand subject-specific vocabulary.
• Teach engaging English, math, or science lessons catering to different proficiency levels and learning styles.
• Create low-cost instructional aids and classroom materials that complement the national curriculum.
• Strengthen assessment practices to adequately prepare students for national exams.
• Identify opportunities to integrate life skills lessons into existing subjects.
• Design activities and projects that promote learning outside the classroom.
• Work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a reading club or health club.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in secondary education with a concentration in any science, or
• Bachelor's degree in any discipline with secondary certification in science, or
• Bachelor's degree in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering, or
• Bachelor's degree in any physical or biological science or equivalent, or
• Bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minor or equivalent in biology, chemistry, or physics.
