About the role
The Guidance Counselor serves under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Services. Key responsibilities include assisting students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities, helping them make course and subject selections, and coordinating with teachers and community organizations to provide information on educational and career opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Interprets standardized test scores and other data to develop education and occupation plans for students.
- Aids students in selecting courses and subjects, and in exploring career interests.
- Schedules classes and assists with admissions and scholarship processes.
- Coordinates with administrators and teachers to understand individual student needs, including those with special needs.
- Researches educational and career opportunities and collaborates with educational and business professionals.
- Provides orientation to new students and assists with dropout prevention efforts.
- Engages in professional development and maintains accurate records for student information.
- Counsels students to promote personal growth and academic success.
- Organizes field trips and provides in-service training for new teachers.
Requirements
- Georgia State Certification as a Guidance Counselor.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education-related field.
- Masters degree preferred.
- Successful prior teaching experience at the appropriate grade level preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements.
- Understanding of college/university admissions processes, scholarship programs, and other educational opportunities.
- Knowledge of current developments in business and industry regarding career opportunities and employment.
- Ability to use computer networks and software applications.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
