Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy (MGLVA), a Stride K12 partner school, is seeking a High School Counselor to promote student success through a comprehensive school counseling program.

About the Role

This full-time, virtual position supports students in academic success, social and emotional development, and career and college planning. The role requires the ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week, and maintain a professional home office without distraction during work hours (e.g., 9 AM–5 PM or 8 AM–4 PM). Up to 20% travel may be required for professional development, student testing, or school-related activities.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students in planning for postsecondary options (education, military, or workforce).
  • Assist students in applying academic achievement strategies and managing emotions/interpersonal skills.
  • Focus on college and career readiness for students and families.
  • Meet quarterly with students to review graduation plans and post-secondary options.
  • Deliver classroom instruction based on student success standards.
  • Review transcripts and academic documentation for new and returning students.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to develop four-year graduation plans and audit student schedules for graduation eligibility.
  • Recommend course placements, including Advanced Placement (AP) and enrichment pathways.
  • Analyze student data to develop intervention action plans.
  • Provide short-term counseling and referrals for long-term support.
  • Support teachers, staff, and parents through a collaborative system.
  • Assist with standardized testing, parent education, and staff development.
  • Advocate for students at IEP meetings and other student-focused meetings.
  • Support goal setting and academic planning for college and career readiness.

Requirements

  • Michigan School Counselor Certification.
  • Must reside in Michigan.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three (3) years of experience in counseling and/or advisement.
  • School Counselor License.
  • Ability to clear a required background check.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, web-based search engines, and database systems.
  • Flexible schedule with ability to travel as needed.
  • Master’s degree in school counseling (preferred).
  • Advanced coursework in counseling and administration (preferred).
  • Experience as a teacher (desired).
  • Customer service experience (desired).
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, including mandated reporting (desired).
  • Charter school experience (preferred).
  • Experience with state career planning systems (e.g., Pathfinder) or similar tools (desired).

Pay

Stride, Inc. determines salary based on education, experience, qualifications, work location, expected quality and quantity of work, and required travel. Offers typically fall within the bottom half of the range.
