Description
The high school assistant coach is responsible to the athletic director/building principal for the planning, coordinating, and directing of specific athletic activities to which he/she has been assigned. Primary Duties And Responsibilities:
- Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for their implementation.
- Develop his/her part of the athletic program to the utmost, prioritizing participation and friendly competition over won-lost records.
- Recognize athletic activities as an integral part of a well-balanced educational program.
- Coordinate athletic activities that might conflict with the normal school program.
- Provide vigorous activities that develop the physique, improve cardiovascular efficiency, and enhance physical skills.
- Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences.
- Be knowledgeable of rules, regulations, and policies set forth by the Hammond School Board, the School Administration, the Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and the Indiana Lake Shore Conference.
- Prepare an athletic budget, select and hire officials, requisition equipment, and supplies, arrange schedules, and perform other duties necessary for the efficient operation of an athletic program.
- Follow the outlined procedures for caring for injured athletes, ensuring every participant has had a required physical examination and signed Parent & Physician’s Certificate.
- Work closely with the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics in checking player eligibility, making out eligibility lists, and sending IHSAA entry lists on time.
- Develop plans for issuing and receiving play equipment, working with the Director of Athletics.
- Attend departmental staff meetings, clinics, and other professional growth activities as approved by the principal.
- Cooperate with other members of the athletic staff in establishing sound rules for conduct, dress, and appearance.
- Ensure compliance with the School City of Hammond's non-discrimination policy.
Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
- A thorough understanding of the participants: physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
- Desirable character and personality traits.
- High moral standards.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members, and the administration.
- A thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the instructor’s areas of responsibility.
- Availability to supervise activities beyond the school day.
