High-Performance Writer (Entertainment & Gaming)

About the role

This is a paid freelance, remote position with Polygon, a leading digital publication covering gaming, entertainment, and culture. We serve millions of readers with smart, authoritative stories on video games, movies, TV shows, franchises, streaming hits, and more. We aim to be a go-to destination for passionate fans and curious newcomers alike, focusing on quality, timeliness, and relevance.

This role is about creating timely, high-performing pieces around trending Entertainment and/or Gaming topics to drive traffic and audience engagement. Your earnings scale with the success of your articles—payment is commensurate with the views your content generates.

Responsibilities

• Keep up with trends and evolving SEO practices to produce high-impact articles every week.
• Monitor industry trends, new releases, streaming charts, gaming developments, and online discourse to surface smart, timely story ideas.
• Identify topics and angles with strong audience and traffic potential across Entertainment and/or Gaming.
• Write clear, engaging, and accurate copy that follows Polygon’s editorial and SEO guidelines.
• Submit assignments in a timely manner that are properly self-edited.
• Work closely with segment leads and implement feedback quickly and constructively.
• Maintain a consistent, professional freelance schedule.
• Demonstrate strong knowledge of Entertainment and/or Gaming, both classic and current.

Requirements

• Educational background in journalism, communications, English, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience writing editorial content, ideally within the entertainment or gaming space.
• Excellent grasp of pop culture and strong familiarity with the Entertainment and/or Gaming landscape.
• For Entertainment writers: strong knowledge of movies and television, including major franchises, streaming platforms, genres, current releases, and entertainment trends.
• For Gaming writers: strong knowledge of video games, including major franchises, genres, platforms, developers, current releases, and gaming industry trends.
• Strong instincts for identifying timely topics and developing angles that can attract and engage a large digital audience.
• Comfort with SEO principles and headline strategy, including keyword integration and audience-first framing.
• Prior experience with a CMS (WordPress or similar preferred).
• A collaborative and proactive work ethic.
