About the Role

The Helper assists the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to collect garbage, yard waste, or recycling.

Responsibilities

• Picks up solid waste and places it in the back of a rear load garbage truck, often done manually or by pushing toter to tipper.
• Lifts and carries trash bags, bulk items, and containers to the truck for disposal.
• Climbs onto and off of the rear truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts.
• Operates packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
• Provides courteous and efficient customer service to the public and customers during refuse operations.
• Ensures garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly, including using back doors when required.
• Answers resident questions and directs them to Customer Service or appropriate government offices for additional information.
• Complies with all ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies, including Waste Pro Absolute Guidelines.
• Assists the Driver in safely backing up the truck by providing ground direction.
• Cleans behind the compactor blade with shovel and hoe when directed.
• Sprays and cleans the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
• Reports safety or customer service issues to the driver and supervisor immediately.
• Performs manual clean-up of scattered refuse and ensures customer containers are replaced properly.
• Cleans up areas around accidental waste spills.
• May work during emergency situations.
• Assists other routes as needed to complete daily work.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
• Attends and participates in corporation-sponsored training courses as assigned.
• Keeps up to date on current technology relevant to the job.

Work Environment

Works in a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, weather variations (heat, cold, snow, rain, wind), noise, vibrations, fumes, odors, and dust.
