Job Purpose

As a Helper in the Operations and Construction Department for New York City, you will experience the personal challenge of working for a world class organization and leader in the Utilities and Energy Industry.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform traffic control, flagging functions.
  • Perform manual-laboring work such as digging, backfilling, breaking and removing; pavement (asphalt/concrete).
  • Helper may work with heavy pneumatic tools; Provide physical assistance for setting up and operating underground tools; work with higher-classified personnel by performing laboring functions in connection with the higher classification. This includes strenuous work through out the day (including but not limited to) squatting, walking, lifting tools and materials greater than 80lbs.
  • Perform similar or less-skilled work as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Three years similar or related work.
  • Plumbing experience preferred.
  • Should be mechanically inclined and capable of performing strenuous work.
  • Applicant will be required to demonstrate the mental ability and aptitude to progress to hire classifications.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

NOTE

Note: Must successfully complete the following: - DOT Physical, Respirator Fit Level 1 - Pre-assessment testing, regulatory safety training, traffic control/flagger training, Gas Fundamentals training, Abnormal Operating Condition Operator qualification training, Soft-Tissue Injury Prevention training, and Helper-specific training programs.

Valid Driver’s License required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy

  • Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA).
  • The Company’s testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
  • Many of the terms and conditions of employment for this position are defined by a collective bargaining agreement that the Company has with a local union. Newly hired employees are bound by the terms of the collective bargaining agreement as well as other agreements between the Company and the local union.
