Aunt Mary's Storybook, a project of Companions Journeying Together, seeks compassionate volunteers to support incarcerated individuals and their families in Cook County Jail, Chicago.

Volunteer Role

• Monthly commitment on the Second Saturday of each month from 8:45 AM to 1:30 PM
• Help incarcerated people choose books that resonate with the children most important to them
• Assist with recording sessions to capture these special moments
• Work as part of a team with two to three other volunteers

Qualifications

• Open-mindedness towards working with diverse and justice-involved populations
• Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules or session cancellations
• Safety and boundaries: ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and follow all facility and program protocols
• Previous experience in working directly with justice-impacted people (preferred), or relevant experience in education, library services, counseling, social work, or related fields
• A calm and cool exterior, positive demeanor, and the ability to create a supportive and encouraging environment

Background Check

Willingness to undergo an annual background check and clearance process with the facility, including attendance at mandatory security trainings.
