Heavy Equipment/ Truck Technician

Transdev in Elkton, MD is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment/Truck Technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines across various vehicles and equipment. This role ensures safety, efficiency, and longevity for our fleet.

Responsibilities

• Perform limited repairs with moderate supervision, including replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, fluid level checks, fluid/filter changes, and component lubrication.
• Maintain, repair, and inspect specialty heavy-duty equipment such as loaders, landfill packers, excavators, backhoes, Morbark machinery, and Vermeer grinders.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and industry best practices.
• Perform mechanical repairs under moderate supervision, including brakes, brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches, hydraulic systems, and electrical components.
• Maintain records of all maintenance work, including parts and supplies used; ensure accurate completion of work orders.
• Track parts usage and order repair parts from designated suppliers.
• Assist Tech III with preventative maintenance (PM’s), safety maintenance inspections, and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals.
• Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle and equipment repair under moderate supervision.
• Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective actions taken.
• Evaluate completed work prior to release and seek approval where required.
• Assist with road calls and emergency services as necessary.
• Adhere to Transdev standards, policies, and procedures.
• Safely move vehicles between job and work area.
• Repair and maintain all shop equipment.
• Clean vehicles as requested or required.
• Perform other responsibilities as requested.
• Maintain an adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties in a clean and safe manner.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred).
• Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire).
• State inspection license (if required).
• ASE Certification preferred; must participate in ASE testing program within 1 year (expected to have 3 ASE certifications within 12 months of hire).
• Intermediate mechanical aptitude and 3 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience.
• Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Intermediate problem-solving ability and computer skills.
• Comfortable using hand tools.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment.
• Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.
• Subject to DOT drug testing; DOT Regulation 49 CFR Part 40 does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.

Physical Requirements

• Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions—100% of the job is performed outside, often alone and in remote locations.
• Sit for extended periods (up to 6–8 hours per day); frequently walk for long distances on sloped, slippery, or uneven surfaces.
• Push and pull objects occasionally throughout the workday; lift material weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
• Occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch to access files or equipment stored at ground level.
• Withstand heavy traffic areas while performing duties; tolerate exposure to dust, vehicle fumes, and noise.
