Heavy Equipment Technician-App - DPW-Fleet Services

About the Role

This position is responsible for providing maintenance and repair on the City's heavy vehicles and equipment in support of Department operating activities. The role focuses primarily on Preventive Maintenance (PM), vehicle/equipment inspections, and minor repairs. When this type of work is not readily available, the apprentice may assist higher classification technicians, perform regular repairs, or request guidance as needed.

Responsibilities

• Examines equipment and attachments for wear, breakage, and malfunctions of assemblies such as hoists, boom mechanisms, final drive and power train, steering mechanisms, suspension, stabilizer systems, winches, chassis, and framework.
• Employs specialized testing equipment to localize malfunctions in electronic control systems.
• Dismantles components such as power transmission units, diesel engines, power controls, and hoist shaft mechanisms to determine repair and replacement parts required.
• Disassembles and inspects gears, shafts, and other moving parts to determine the need for adjustment and/or repairs.
• Removes engines, drivetrain, or other defective parts.
• Uses precision measuring devices and power shop tools such as grinders, drills, and cutting torches.
• Test operates equipment to ensure correction of all deficiencies.
• Interprets and applies information from manufacturers' manuals, computer-based manuals, and other data pertinent to vehicle and equipment maintenance.
• Performs final inspections.
• Assists workers of other classifications with their duties.
• Operates service trucks or wreckers when necessary.
• Observes all job-site safety regulations.
• Prepares records for reporting parts usage and labor accounting requirements.

Requirements

• Ability to use hand-held scanners and laptop diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures to ensure safe operations.

• Ability to perform physical tasks such as pulling, reaching, pushing, walking, standing, kneeling, etc.

• Ability to read and understand operating manuals, service manuals (both written and computer-based), and written instructions.
• Ability to operate and test all equipment the incumbent is responsible for repairing.
• Ability to repair and perform work on any piece of equipment owned by the City.
• General working knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and air systems.
• Must possess hand tools relevant to this type of repair work upon reporting to work.
• Must obtain and hold a CDL, Group B, within 60 days of hire.
• Working knowledge of equipment used for engine electronic and component test analysis.
• Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a maintenance facility with frequent travel and exposure to dust, silica, electrical energy, solvents, vibrations during road testing, and various road conditions. May work on slippery or uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects, vehicles, ladders, or scaffolding, and with hands in water or wet material. The incumbent may work alone or with others, in awkward or cramped positions.
