Heavy Equipment Operator - Paving
Description
The Paving Equipment Operator is a skilled role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of intermediate to advanced paving machinery. This individual works as part of a high-production paving crew to install asphalt or concrete on highways, parking lots, and specialized infrastructure projects. The Paving Equipment Operator II is expected to possess a high degree of technical proficiency, assisting with grade control, material flow regulation, and the training of junior crew members. This role is central to maintaining Martin Marietta’s 'Guardian Angel' safety culture while meeting strict quality and production deadlines.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Operate complex paving machinery including, but not limited to, asphalt pavers, large steel-drum rollers, pneumatic rollers, and milling machines.
- Regulate screed temperatures, asphalt flow rates, and hopper levels to ensure a seamless and uniform mat.
- Utilize automated grade and slope controls to meet project specifications and ensure proper drainage.
- Execute specific rolling patterns to achieve required density and smoothness, preventing 'bumping' or surface defects.
- Conduct thorough daily inspections of fluid levels, hoses, tires/tracks, and safety devices, document findings in electronic or paper maintenance logs.
- Perform routine minor maintenance such as greasing fittings, cleaning the screed, and applying release agents to prevent asphalt buildup.
- Identify and report mechanical malfunctions or wear-and-tear to the Foreman immediately to prevent downtime.
- Use hand signals or radio communication to guide dump trucks into the paver hopper, ensuring a constant and steady material supply.
- Monitor the distribution of paving materials; identify and correct low spots or irregularities behind the paver.
- Assist in the training and development of Operators and laborers on equipment safety and basic operation techniques.
- Adhere to all Martin Marietta and OSHA safety regulations, including the consistent use of PPE (Hard hat, safety vest, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection).
- Absorb and communicate information about work zone traffic control devices (cones, barrels, signs) to ensure crew and public safety.
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation and contribute to general jobsite 'housekeeping' tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
- Work Experience: 3–5 years of experience in asphalt paving or heavy highway construction.
- Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: OSHA compliance and regulations, mechanical aptitude, technical aptitude, detail oriented, time management, effective communication (written and spoken), leadership.
Additional Details
- Physical Requirements: You must be able to lift up to 50–75 lbs regularly. This includes handling tools, maintenance parts, and debris. High frequency of climbing ladders/stairs (up to 100 feet for plant inspections), bending, stooping, and kneeling to inspect or grease equipment. Ability to walk and stand for long periods on uneven, steep, or rough terrain.
- Travel On-site.
- Working Conditions: All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
