Heavy Equipment Operator I - DPW-D4 Street Maint Repair
About the role
This position is responsible for operating a variety of construction machinery including asphalt pavers, milling machines, rollers, and earth-moving equipment. It also involves coordinating work activities of personnel and enforcing job-site safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of powered (light and heavy) construction equipment such as asphalt paver, milling machines, front-end loaders, backhoes, lifts, graders, heavy trucks, and other related earth moving equipment.
- Perform minor maintenance services on vehicles and equipment such as washing, tightening chains, replacing cables and bolts, checking tire inflation, and lubrication according to manufacturer's recommended schedule.
- Direct work activities of assigned personnel in executing delegated tasks.
- Enforce job-site safety regulations and standards.
- Assume responsibility for taking appropriate and necessary actions in the event of job-related injuries and in the absence of a supervisor.
- Work overtime as assigned.
- Assist with asphalt patching, crack sealing, concrete work, playground equipment repair, grounds keeping, and other related duties.
- Clean/wash equipment as needed.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid Class B or A CDL driver's license required (Class A preferred).
- Knowledge of and work experience in safe and efficient operation of all construction equipment, and ability to provide minor maintenance of such equipment.
- Working knowledge of applicable traffic laws and regulations regarding the operation of assigned equipment on the public right-of-way.
- Ability to perform safe and correct procedures for asphalt paver, milling machines, and related operations according to verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and understand operation manuals, engineering illustrations.
- Ability to perform all the following assignments: straight pulling, walking, standing, kneeling, and mental-muscular coordination.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical.
