About the role
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) is responsible for the inspection, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of company owned equipment. Using both company and industry standards, this role ensures all equipment is safe and road ready.
Responsibilities
- Possess diagnostic capabilities on hydraulic and electrical steer systems on the equipment.
- Weld steel/aluminum to repair parts or fabricate replacement parts.
- Repair and maintain various hydraulic and electrical steer systems.
- Able to understand operator concerns and help develop repair plans.
- Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems. Determine the most effective and efficient method for repair.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.
- Remain technically proficient in all areas of equipment maintenance.
- Ensure safety procedures are implemented, followed, and PPE is always used.
- Be a positive role model for all team members providing support and enthusiasm – creating a professional, positive work environment.
- Move tractors and equipment in and out of the shop for maintenance safely.
- Participate in online OEM training.
- Inspects and performs all minor to complex trailer maintenance including welding, tire replacement, pressure checks, brakes, lights, and safety equipment and submits reports indicating condition of equipment.
- Works within budget that is set for the department.
- Completes DOT inspections on outgoing equipment to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.
- Performs inspections on incoming (Safety Lane) and outgoing company owned equipment using ATS, DOT, and OSHA guidelines to ensure the trailer is operating safely and efficiently.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- A degree/diploma from an accredited Heavy Equipment and/or Diesel Technician program. Or 5+ years of equivalent experience working with heavy/medium duty diesel heavy equipment validated through the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) Foundation Technical Pre-Assessment with a passing overall score of =>65%. And must obtain AED Industry Certified Technician assessment with a passing overall score of =>70% within 1 year of hire date.
- ASE Certifications T4 - Brakes, T5 - Suspensions & Steering, T6 - Electrical/Electronic Systems, and T8 – Preventative Maintenance Inspections is required within 1 year of hire date.
- 5+ years intermediate skills in cutting and welding is required.
- Proficient in the use of torch cutting, welding, and plasma cutting equipment, with the ability to weld both mild steel and aluminum to a high standard. Capable of independently welding a wide range of equipment components, including structural areas, while consistently meeting quality repair standard.
- Proficient in rebuilding full Tridec steer systems and replacing all bushings and bearings can document and train others to do this following an SOP.
- Tear down and rebuild Booster Pivot bearings, Hatbox bearings, fifth goosenecks and large Heavy Yellow repairs with some guidance.
- Skills and knowledge to work on all equipment such as 3 axle RGN’s, 4 Axle RGN’s, Blades, Multi Axle, Perimeters and Schnable’s.
- Possesses skills and knowledge to perform comprehensive repairs on small gas engines and accurately diagnose hydraulic systems on multi-axle and blade equipment.
- Install and take out deck sections and beam sections upon request. Can convert multi axle equipment into steerable equipment upon request.
- Perform accident damage repairs including full rear end replacements, axle and boogie box swaps, side-rail and cross member repairs and up to Multi Axle and Schnabel equipment.
- Knowledge of the equipment air systems. Be able to diagnose and make repairs and re-plumb equipment air systems. Can train others in this area as well.
- Brake inspection certified. Demonstrate an understanding on how to replace brakes, wheel seals, S-Cams, Chambers. Will have performed brake, wheel seal, S-Cam replacement on various equipment and can perform this procedure independently and done to ATS and DOT specs.
- Tire Certified with an understanding of the tire program, consistently demonstrated through day-to-day performance on the shop floor.
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license required, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.
- Ability to operate all related shop equipment.
- Dot and Forklift certification is preferred; must be able to obtain certification within one year.
- Excellent communications skills (written, verbal, listening). Able to communicate effectively with drivers to gather detailed information and understand the root cause of equipment issues, ensuring accurate diagnostic and timely repairs.
- Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
- Basis knowledge in using computers including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
- Working knowledge of proper procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
- Ability to perform diagnostics to identify mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment using specialized tools and diagnostic software to ensure accurate and efficient repairs.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently and successfully submit warranty claims and model proper completion of procedures. Follows through with successful repairs, part documentation and data collection.
