About the role
The work involves responsibility for performing repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered, self-propelled and non self-propelled motor driven equipment, vehicles and stationary equipment.
This class differs from Automotive Mechanic by virtue of required knowledge of and skill in maintaining fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel powerplants, as well as making overall repairs to a wide range of heavy equipment commonly used in highway construction and maintenance.
General instructions are received regarding tasks to be done with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.
Responsibilities
- Perform repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered, self-propelled and non self-propelled motor driven equipment, vehicles and stationary equipment.
- Maintain fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel powerplants.
- Make overall repairs to a wide range of heavy equipment commonly used in highway construction and maintenance.
- Receive general instructions regarding tasks to be done with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.
- Perform related work as required.
Requirements
- Two (2) years’ experience as a skilled automotive mechanic which shall have involved the repair and overhaul of automotive diesel engines and heavy motor equipment.
- Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Mechanic traineeship.
- Substitution of one (1) year of experience described above with successful completion of a certified training course in diesel engine repair offered by a New York State approved technical training institute.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid New York State Class D Driver's license.
- Possession of a Motor Vehicle Inspector's Certificate.
