Heat Treat Lab Technician
Position Overview
As part of the talented Quality Team, you will conduct analytical procedures in metallurgy with instrumentation required for the control of Heat Treatment and metal finishing process operations and resultant product quality, under the supervision of the Heat Treat Metallurgical Engineer.
Essential Functions
- Prepares metallographic samples for testing to specifications.
- Performs hardness tests on parts and samples.
- Performs microstructural review of heat treat samples.
- Performs analysis of steel shot for process control.
- Reviews heat treat thermal process charts to confirm temperature requirements are met.
- Support, work with, and communicate with Heat Treat Dept. shop floor operators to make sure parts are properly processed.
- Support Heat Treat Dept. supervision to maintain production priority needs.
- Prepares written Heat Treat Lab instructions to standardize procedures.
- Follows special non-production related parts and heat treat processes to completion and ensures the requirements are met.
- Maintains written records of data from laboratory tests and of operating data from plant processes.
- Designs and performs laboratory experiments for the modification or improvement of plant heat treat processes.
- Maintains the laboratory and its equipment, and verifies the gages meet calibration requirements.
- Verifies metal chemistry of materials for control of Heat Treatment.
- Affixes assistance with Training and Project Management of Student Co-ops working in the Heat Treat Metallurgical Lab.
- Has responsibility for the Heat Treat Lab when Heat Treat Metallurgical Engineer is out of office.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- College level course work in chemistry, metallurgy physics, mathematics.
- Two to five years working experience in a laboratory preferably related to manufacturing operations including metal finishing.
- General knowledge of Statistics.
- General knowledge of Engineering Principles.
- General knowledge of Failure Analysis.
- Working knowledge of analytical metallurgical lab techniques.
- Working knowledge of Instrumental analysis of metals and materials.
- Working knowledge of Mathematical calculations and data handling methods.
- Working knowledge of Process equipment functions and operation.
- Working knowledge of Safety & handling of hazardous materials.
- Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree desirable.
Compensation
The actual base pay offered will vary based on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate’s qualifications and the business context. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
