About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN applies principles from biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is culturally based, age-specific, and delivered within The Christ Hospital's (TCH) model of care, promoting an ongoing partnership between patients, families, and healthcare providers. The RN adheres to the American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment
    • Conduct holistic assessments of patients’ physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs using the TCH Professional Practice Model.
    • Identify and interpret signs, symptoms, and data related to patients’ presenting needs and actual or potential nursing diagnoses.
    • Report pertinent abnormal data and changes in patient condition to physicians and charge RNs.
    • Utilize appropriate handoff methods to communicate patient data with healthcare team members.
    • Assess patient, family, and environmental safety risks and proactively implement safety initiatives.
  • Diagnosis and Planning
    • Establish and prioritize individualized patient problems and needs based on collected data.
    • Prepare, coordinate, and revise multidisciplinary care plans in collaboration with patients and families, aligning with TCH’s Patient and Family Centered Care model.
    • Set measurable goals for each identified problem and communicate the plan of care using SBAR and handoff processes.
    • Initiate discharge planning upon admission and make appropriate referrals based on anticipated length of stay.
  • Implementation
    • Provide evidence-based, quality care based on assessed needs and hospital policies to achieve set goals.
    • Perform and delegate nursing actions based on physician orders, demonstrating critical thinking and accountability.
    • Deliver ongoing, individualized holistic education to patients and families in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
    • Review physician orders, make appropriate referrals, and contact other health team professionals as needed.
    • Respond to emergency situations with controlled precision and skill.
    • Implement measures to prevent contamination and disease transmission, including the use of protective devices and equipment.
  • Evaluation
    • Continuously evaluate nursing practice in relation to evidence-based standards, individual care plans, and patient outcomes.
    • Assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions and adjust or continue the plan of care based on patient and family response.
    • Maintain continuity of care through continuous evaluation during handoff reports, rounding, and transfers.
  • Documentation
    • Accurately and concisely document the nursing process in the patient’s electronic medical record, reflecting the plan of care.
    • Document updates, teaching, and patient/family responses to care in a timely manner, per hospital policy.
  • Leadership and Professional Development
    • Demonstrate leadership skills, including motivating, educating, delegating, and mentoring peers and healthcare team members.
    • Assume responsibility for professional growth and development, contributing to the development of peers and colleagues.
    • Participate in at least 75% of staff meetings and council meetings as appropriate.
    • Engage in unit-based activities for performance improvement, evidence-based projects, and research.
    • Support professional growth and development of self and peers through available resources and opportunities.
    • Act as a resource, educator, and preceptor for multidisciplinary team members, staff, and nursing students, evaluating and documenting competency.
    • Maintain competency in point-of-care (POC) testing for unit-specific nursing practice.
    • Strongly encouraged: Participation in the professional advancement program, certification in work area, involvement in professional organizations, research activities, and community service.
  • Employee Responsibilities
    • Comply with organization and department policies, including required training.
    • Complete all educational requirements to maintain competency, including 100% on-time completion of Healthstream education and attendance at annual education days.
    • Submit required tests and paperwork in a timely manner without management intervention.
    • Adhere to time and attendance policies, including clocking in/out with a badge and requesting time off in advance.

Requirements

  • Education
    • AD or Diploma nurses are hired; however, all nurses hired after January 2010 must obtain a BSN within 5 years of hire.
    • RNs employed at TCH prior to January 2010 with over 20 years of experience may pursue a BSN voluntarily.
    • MSN or DNP degrees supersede the BSN requirement but are not mandatory.
  • Experience
    • No prior experience required.
  • Skills and Knowledge
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age- and culturally-specific patient care and education.
    • Effectively communicate with peers, maintain confidentiality, and work in a culturally diverse setting.
    • Demonstrate competence and evidence of continuing professional growth.
    • Ability to accept and implement change.
  • Licenses and Certifications
    • Current Ohio RN licensure.
    • BLS certification required prior to patient contact.
    • ACLS required within 6 months of hire for step-down and ICU areas.
    • Certification in clinical specialty expected within five years of eligibility.
    • Membership in professional organizations is desirable.
