Healthcare Rights & Access Deputy Attorney General
About the role
The California Department of Justice protects and serves the People and interests of California. The Healthcare Rights and Access Section leads affirmative healthcare matters, representing the Attorney General in his independent capacity and coordinating healthcare work within the Department. The Section has comprehensive authority over investigations, litigation, and legislation to increase and protect the accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare for California residents, focusing on consumer protection and fraud, civil rights and equity, reproductive justice, unfair competition, and privacy.
The Attorney General is committed to protecting access to healthcare for all Californians regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, disability, age, or LGBTQ status. The Section represents the Attorney General in his independent capacity to protect California residents, including women, LGBTQ individuals, and other marginalized populations, through affirmative litigation and amicus curiae briefs in significant healthcare civil rights cases.
This position focuses on federal accountability work to ensure California's access to affordable and equitable healthcare, including addressing threats from the federal administration. Deputy Attorneys General work in teams handling proactive healthcare matters, including complex legal work related to investigations, trials, writs, and appeals. They may also coordinate communications with other state Attorney General's Offices and federal and state government agencies.
Responsibilities
- Engage in federal accountability work to protect California's access to affordable and equitable healthcare.
- Handle complex legal work related to investigations, trials, writs, and appeals on healthcare matters.
- Participate in affirmative litigation and file amicus curiae briefs in significant healthcare civil rights cases.
- Coordinate and facilitate communications with other state Attorney General's Offices and federal/state government agencies.
- Work in teams on proactive healthcare matters requiring independent judgment.
Qualifications
Candidates may be considered for the following classifications based on experience:
- Deputy Attorney General IV: 6+ years of experience
- Deputy Attorney General III: 5 years of experience
- Deputy Attorney General: 0-5 years of experience
Pay
- Deputy Attorney General IV: $11,993.00 - $16,096.00 per month
- Deputy Attorney General III: $10,852.00 - $15,325.00 per month
- Deputy Attorney General: $7,969.00 - $12,026.00 per month
Starting salaries for new hires in the Deputy Attorney General series:
- Deputy Attorney General (0-24 months): $8,846 (Range A)
- Deputy Attorney General (2-5 years): $9,956 (Range B)
- Deputy Attorney General III (5 years): $12,046
- Deputy Attorney General IV (6+ years): $13,313
The Deputy Attorney General classifications qualify for a "Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary. The Personal Leave Program (PLP) effective July 1, 2025, may temporarily reduce wages in exchange for accrued leave.
Schedule
This is a 12-month limited term, full-time position, which may be extended to a maximum of 24 months and/or may become permanent based on operational needs.
Work Location
These positions are located in the Public Rights Division, Healthcare Rights and Access Section, and may be filled in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, or San Diego. Hybrid telework is available.
