Responsibilities
- Performs clerical duties.
- Completes patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Communicates patient care needs to nursing staff.
- Validates and enters accurate accommodation codes and patient billing charges.
- Facilitates information exchange between departments and external agencies.
- Enters patient and caregiver information into the Electronic Medical Record system.
- Orders, validates, and stores supplies and patient education materials.
- Organizes patient charts as needed.
- Answers phones and call lights, forwarding calls or information as necessary.
- Prints Release of Information packets for discharge to nursing homes or other facilities.
- Maintains unit keys and cards for float staff.
- Supports and trains new and existing staff and students.
- Transports unopened containers of non-controlled medications to the primary RN or designated storage location.
- Retrieves and presents Medicare second notices of notification to patients.
- Retrieves and reviews patient history and physical information.
- Ensures a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Reports environmental risks or equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Graduate of a Technical Institute Health Unit Coordinator program (preferred).
- At least 2 years of experience in a medical office or hospital setting (preferred if not certified as a Health Unit Coordinator).
- Experience with Windows-based applications and keyboarding skills (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 or more years of experience as a Health Unit Coordinator.
- 2 or more years of experience with Windows-based applications and keyboarding skills.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology.

Pay
The pay range for this position is $21.58 to $30.80 per hour. Your starting rate will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, and union agreements (if applicable).
Schedule
12-hour day shifts with every 3rd weekend rotation.
