Health Unit Coordinator - Emergency Department

Banner University Medical Center - Tucson is seeking an entry-level Health Unit Coordinator to provide administrative support and customer service for an assigned patient care area, promoting organized and efficient care delivery.

About the role

This position facilitates communication between physicians, nurses, and patients, calls in consults, and acts as a liaison with internal departments and external contacts. The role is full-time on a day shift, including rotating weekends and holidays. Weekend shifts earn a flat $1/hour differential, and night shifts earn an 18% differential. Self-scheduling is available.

Responsibilities

  • Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support operating efficiency and communication flow.
  • Resolves customer problems or collects data for follow-up by appropriate staff.
  • Processes patient admissions, records bed assignments, creates face sheets, and prints patient labels.
  • Orders outside records from other facilities and physician offices.
  • Maintains complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Ensures all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into patient records.
  • Labels and ensures accessibility of charting forms.
  • Maintains supplies of patient education materials and may be responsible for QC/validations.
  • Enters pending discharges into the system and coordinates patient appointments for procedures/treatments.
  • Processes patient discharges.
  • Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies; completes requisition forms.
  • Reconciles supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitors and tracks electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops) to ensure accountability and functionality.

Works under local supervision in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. Interacts with patients, families, physicians, unit staff, case managers, patient service staff, medical records staff, and external customers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • 1 year of medical clerical experience (preferably in a hospital or physician office) or prior customer service experience.
  • Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy.
  • Proficiency in commonly used office software and keyboarding skills.

Employees in Behavioral Health clinical settings serving children must possess and maintain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an approved unit secretary program.
  • BLS certification.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 3 x 12-hour shifts (6:00 AM – 6:30 PM or 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM).
  • No set day schedules; weekend rotations and rotating holidays (1 major, 1 minor) are required.

Pay

  • Flat $1/hour weekend shift differential.
  • 18% night shift differential when applicable.
