Health Unit Coordinator-Delnor Cardiac Telemetry Unit Part Time Days
About the Role
The Health Unit Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. This role performs unit-based reception, clerical, medical record, and patient registration functions, serving as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments. The position manages overall unit workflow in coordination with the charge RN and/or assistant manager.
Schedule
This position requires 8-hour shifts from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, rotating two to three shifts per week with every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and rotating holidays throughout the year.
Responsibilities

- Coordinates work with the Manager and Charge Nurse; communicates clearly with co-workers and physicians.
- Consults other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
- Retrieves lab results from the computer and brings them to the attention of the nurse caring for the patient.
- Interacts professionally with patients and families, providing explanations and reassurance.
- Prepares medical records for new admissions and disassembles charts for discharge, forwarding them to Medical Records.
- Maintains proper record assembly in chronological order and obtains necessary signatures.
- Understands the Petition and Certificate process for Involuntary Admissions.
- Transcribes and clarifies handwritten physician orders and clinical data accurately.
- Enters and verifies orders in the computer to ensure timely delivery of medications, supplies, and services.
- Seeks learning opportunities and participates in professional growth and development activities.
- Demonstrates computer competence for order entry, results, documentation, and policies.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

- Answers telephones, monitors unit cameras, and manages intercom/door entry systems politely.
- Utilizes critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work as needs change.
- Monitors and corrects patient status in the computer as necessary.
- Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge, and census lists.
- Registers patients in the computer and conducts telephone screenings for appropriate dispositions.
- Observes patient confidentiality rules and Release of Information data.
- Orders supplies and prints forms used for patient charts.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to assess situations requiring an interpreter and use interpreter services effectively.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience in a healthcare role or medical office with EMR.
