About the role
The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) functions as the receptionist and communication liaison for the patient care unit. This role supports the clinical team by coordinating patient care activities, managing unit communications, and maintaining patient records.
Responsibilities
- Performs clerical duties including maintaining patient charts, transcribing physician orders, and processing admissions, transfers, and discharges
- Serves as the central communication hub for the unit by answering telephones, relaying messages, and directing visitors
- Coordinates patient care activities with other departments (e.g., lab, radiology, transport, food services)
- Assembles and maintains patient medical records in accordance with hospital policies
- Processes and tracks patient charges, supplies, and equipment requests
- Assists with patient safety by monitoring patient tracking systems and alerting clinical staff to changes in patient status or needs
- Collaborates with nursing staff to support efficient patient flow and unit operations
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to navigate electronic medical records systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Customer service orientation with professional interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations
Qualifications
- Previous healthcare experience in a hospital or medical office setting preferred
- Experience with medical terminology and hospital order entry systems preferred
- Knowledge of patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes preferred

Part-time, evening shift.
