Health Service Worker

About the role

These positions provide clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers while promoting public health and ensuring quality patient care in a public health department setting. Under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician, these roles perform basic Certified Medical Assistant duties and related work as required.

Responsibilities

• Collect laboratory specimens, including phlebotomy procedures
• Administer immunizations and medications as directed by a licensed provider
• Educate patients and families on treatment procedures, disease prevention, and wellness
• Maintain accurate medical records (HER/EMR)
• Schedule appointments and update patient information
• Handle billing and insurance matters
• Answer phones and support public health programs such as immunization clinics

Requirements

Minimum qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid or volunteer experience in the care, treatment, and development of patients or residents of a healthcare facility

OR

• Certification or registration as a Nursing Assistant or Nurse Aide (may substitute for the required training and experience)

For positions at the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department:

• Certification as a Medical Assistant may substitute for the required training and experience

Preferences

• Current Certified Medical Assistant certificate
• Experience in collecting lab specimens, performing phlebotomy, administering injections of immunizations and/or medications
• Experience scheduling appointments, managing medical records (HER/EMR), updating patient information, handling billing and insurance, and answering phones
