The Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is based on the Richmond Campus, which employs more than 1,200 people. The CLS serves to protect and promote the health of all Californians through innovative and collaborative infectious disease and environmental testing, including investigation and surveillance activities that form the basis of disease response and prevention. The CLS brings together emerging scientific capabilities in testing, analytics, and communications to support the public health laboratory system at the state, local, and national levels.

About the role

This position supports CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by strengthening the state environmental public health and laboratory testing program. The Health Program Specialist (HPS) I functions as a highly skilled, technical program specialist, assisting in the planning, organizing, and carrying out of scientific research studies to reduce airborne pathogen transmission by improving air quality as mandated under Health and Safety Code 425,105400 et seq.

Responsibilities

• Assist with strategy design, policy recommendations, programmatic interventions, data collection and analysis, and evaluation methods.
• Provide consultations to local, state, and federal agencies and community organizations.
• Perform complex administrative and fiscal tasks for the air quality program.
• Work under the direction of the Research Scientist Manager, Branch Chief of the Environmental Health Laboratory Branch (EHLB).

Requirements

• If new to California state service, you must have taken and passed the examination for this classification to be hired.
• Current state employees without transfer or list eligibility must also have taken and passed the examination for this classification.
• This position is subject to the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025, which temporarily reduces monthly base pay by 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027.

Pay

$6,623.00 - $8,290.00 per month. New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Permanent, full-time position. Hybrid telework available.
