About the role
The Health Physics Technician position supports all facets of operation at UniTech facilities across the United States. Responsibilities include performing radiological surveys, calibrating and maintaining instrumentation, managing radioactive waste, issuing dosimeters, and supporting plant operations and special projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform radiological surveys involving various instrumentation to monitor contamination and radiation levels.
- Survey plant work areas, support areas, perimeter boundaries, and the environment.
- Calibrate and perform daily quality control of handheld and laboratory instruments including gas flow proportional counting systems, liquid scintillation counters, and gamma spectroscopy.
- Collect and analyze air and water samples and assist in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment systems.
- Utilize various software packages to input data, evaluate results, print, and maintain reports.
- Calibrate and maintain specialized instrumentation including ALMs, personnel monitors, pipe monitors, respirator monitors, and other specialized equipment.
- Package, sample, inventory, and maintain records of radioactive waste.
- Issue personnel, area, and environmental TLDs and SRPDs and assist in the management of the dosimetry program.
- Perform personnel in-vivo bioassays (chest counts).
- Perform assays to release materials and equipment from radiological controls.
- Support plant operations and special projects.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree in health physics or nuclear engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, or science.
- Practical experience in radiological safety.
- Computer proficiency: Microsoft Word®, Microsoft Excel®.
- Able to learn custom software.
- Shift work may be required.
- Able to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and information.
- Proficient in communication, verbally and in written reports.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Able to stand throughout an 8-hour shift.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Professional credential (or ability to achieve): National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).
