Health Physics Supervisor (PNs 20013929 & 20013940)

About the Role

ODH is seeking to fill two Health Physics Supervisor positions within the Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Protection (BEHRP). The primary worksite for this position will be Franklin County. Emergency response activities may require evening and weekend work and may require carrying a cell phone for 24-hour on-call availability.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise health physicists in the radioactive materials program within BEHRP, including:
  • Monitoring and delegating daily work activities
  • Identifying staff development needs and providing training or coaching
  • Onboarding and training new employees
  • Participating in the recruitment process, including conducting interviews and evaluating candidates
  • Reviewing and approving leave requests in accordance with established policies
  • Completing employee performance evaluations within required time frames
  • Facilitating regular staff meetings to communicate goals, updates, and expectations
  • Recommending or initiating corrective and/or disciplinary action when appropriate
• Assist the program administrator and bureau chief in planning, program development, and implementation of the agreement state program within the bureau, including:
  • Developing rules, licensing and inspection criteria, processes, and procedures for implementation of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) agreement
  • Developing performance criteria for compliance and ensuring all processes and procedures meet NRC agreement and state criteria
• Assist the program administrator in the preparation of budgets and reports
• Direct specific activities relating to:
  • Inspection of handlers of both state-controlled and agreement state radioactive materials
  • Special investigations of unusual licensing requests
  • Technical evaluations and inspections relating to agreement state materials
  • Reports of hazardous situations and complaints
  • Environmental monitoring and research projects involving radioactive materials
• Oversee complex and non-repetitive evaluations of production, use, release, disposal, and/or presence of radioactive material in the environment, or exposures to ionizing radiation
• Participate with federal, state, and local agencies in responding to a radiation emergency or exercise, including nuclear power plants during actual emergencies or drill scenarios
• Ensure development, implementation, and continuous improvement of BEHRP program areas

Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification sets:

• 5 years of full-time experience working with one of the following:
  • Radioactive materials
  • Analysis of radioactive materials in the environment
  • Decommissioning of sites contaminated with radioactive materials
  • Radiation-generating equipment
  • Experience dealing with regulatory requirements involving radiation surveys for dose assessment, radiation inspections, analysis of situations involving radioactive materials, or radiologic health and safety
  AND 12 months of experience in supervisory principles/techniques
• NRRPT, CHP, NMTCB, or ARRT certification AND 24 months of full-time experience working with one of the areas listed above AND 12 months of experience in supervisory principles/techniques
• Completion of Navy nuclear school AND 24 months of full-time experience working with one of the areas listed above AND 12 months of experience in supervisory principles/techniques
• 36 months of experience as a Senior Health Physicist (Job Code 84643) AND 12 months of experience in supervisory principles/techniques
