Health Officer

Position Summary

The Health Officer, under the direction of the Program Director, ensures the health and safety of campers and staff.

Essential Responsibilities

• Responsible for the health and safety of campers and staff needing first aid or injured on the campgrounds.
• Ensure health office supplies are adequately stocked at all times, communicating needs to the Program Director.
• Log medical records and medications for campers and staff.
• Pass medication to campers and staff as required.
• Aid in and participate in pre-camp training for staff.
• Communicate and log any medical issues and problems to the Program Director.
• Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions to improve healthful conditions.
• Ensure compliance with The Salvation Army “Safe From Harm” guidelines.
• Conduct health screenings for campers during check-in, including reviewing medical histories, discussing health needs, and observing physical states.
• Report significant problems to appropriate personnel and address dietary needs.
• Report accidents requiring medical care to the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.
• Keep accurate medical logs for campers and staff.
• Implement plans to prevent further spread of illnesses.
• Prepare remaining medications for return to agency representatives.
• Aid in the early departure of any camper as outlined in the Emergency Procedure & Camp Policies section.
• Observe all children daily to assess their physical condition and recommend actions.
• Make decisions regarding medical reasons for excusing or keeping campers from activities.
• Contact Emergency Service Providers if necessary for prompt response in emergencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 18 years old.
• One of the following licenses or certifications:
• Valid physician’s license
• Valid licensed physician’s assistant
• Valid licensed nurse practitioner
• Valid registered nurse
• Valid licensed practical nurse
• Valid licensed emergency medical technician
• Valid licensed medical first responder
• Equivalent certification to meet Wilderness First Responder requirements.
• Community First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.
• Licensed in another state or Canadian province as a physician, physician’s assistant, nurse, or emergency medical technician.
• Current First Aid/CPR certification.
• Completed Safe From Harm training and maintains current status.
• Current valid driver’s license and Salvation Army MVR check.
