Position Summary

The Health Officer, under the direction of the Program Director, ensures the health and safety of campers and staff.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health and safety of campers and staff needing first aid or injured on the campgrounds.
    • Adequately stock health office supplies and communicate needs to the Program Director.
    • Log medical records and medications for campers and staff.
    • Pass medication to campers and staff as required.
    • Assist with and participate in pre-camp training for staff.
    • Communicate and log any medical issues and problems to the Program Director.
    • Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions to improve healthful conditions.
    • Ensure compliance with The Salvation Army “Safe From Harm” standards.
    • Conduct camper check-ins, reviewing medical history forms, emergency authorizations, and conducting health screenings.
    • Check for and report prescription and nonprescription drugs, health histories, current health needs, physical states, potential contagious diseases, and signs of abuse.
    • Report accidents requiring doctor's care to the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.
    • Informally observe campers daily to assess their physical condition and recommend actions.
    • Keep accurate medical logs for campers and staff, implementing plans to prevent illness spread.
    • Prepare remaining medications for return to the agency representative upon camper departure.
    • Aid in the early departure of any camper as outlined in the Emergency Procedure & Camp Policies section.
    • Contact Emergency Service Providers if necessary for prompt response in emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience: High school diploma/GED or equivalent, plus 18 years of age or older.
  • One of the following licenses/licenses/practices: Physician, Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Medical First Responder.
  • Equivalent certifications from National Outdoor Leadership School or American Red Cross.
  • Licensed in another state/province as a physician, physician’s assistant, nurse, or emergency medical technician.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, TEAMS, and SharePoint.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new software.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Completed Safe From Harm training and maintained current.
  • Current valid driver’s license and Salvation Army MVR check.
