Health Insurance Underwriter Manager

About the role

This position will interact with all members of our staff as well as many clients and carrier partners. The primary challenges are the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, lead and develop underwriting staff, communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities and communication styles, and provide strategic underwriting guidance in complex situations. Training and support are provided both corporately and locally.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and approve rating and plan design quotes within Milliman’s underwriting models
  • Ensure proposals and underwriting analyses are accurate, complete, and delivered on time
  • Oversee the day-to-day workflow of underwriting staff, including prioritization of assignments and quality review of work
  • Mentor, train, and develop underwriting staff to build technical underwriting skills, business judgment, and client communication abilities
  • Collaborate with clients to gather additional information needed for underwriting decisions or to explain underwriting outcomes
  • Coordinate with senior leadership on complex cases, escalated issues, and strategic client situations
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for improvement in rating models, underwriting processes, training programs, and client interaction
  • Establish and reinforce underwriting standards, best practices, and quality control procedures
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex underwriting matters and carrier interactions

Qualifications

  • Exceptional administrative, organizational, analytical, and business skills
  • Strong leadership presence with a friendly and engaging personality that enjoys working with a variety of people from across the country
  • Natural attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple team members and project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility with a strong customer-first attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop less experienced underwriting staff
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities in underwriting models, workflows, and client service practices
  • Five or more years of health insurance underwriting experience required
  • Prior supervisory, team lead, or management experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field
