About the role
Health and Human Services offer various different types of internships, both paid and unpaid. Details on types of internships are available below.
Public Health
Public Health Specialist Internships: Designed for a broad range of degrees, focusing on health education and communications. Interns develop and improve health education curriculum, work at community events, participate in preparedness activities, and experience community health assessment and improvement planning work. Job shadowing in all areas of public health is available.
Environmental Health Internship: For students with a science interest, focusing on environmental health including water quality, childhood lead poisoning prevention, laboratory work, environmental sample collection, and vector monitoring. Opportunities for job shadowing in other areas of environmental health are available.
Public Health Nursing Internships: For nurses pursuing a BSN/MSN or enrolled in a BSN completion program. Based on program need, these internships meet the requirements of the community health clinical rotation.
Dietetic Internship: For students pursuing a Bachelors or higher program, supervised by an RD. Provides clinical experience in a community WIC setting, including nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, biometric assessment, and community education efforts.
Aging and Disability Resource Center Dietetic Internship: Supervised by an RD, this internship provides nutrition/health education and services for older adults, including screening for nutrition risk, providing counseling, documenting consumer interactions, and exposure to senior nutrition programs.
Aging and Disability Resource Center Social Work Internship: For bachelor degree level social work students, working with older adults and adults with disabilities, learning information and assistance, options counseling, and connecting to resources and benefits. Exposure to other service areas like elder abuse investigation, senior nutrition programs, health promotion, and Veteran Services is provided.
Childhood and Families
Child Welfare Bachelor Level Internships: Designed for Social Work degrees, focusing on child welfare services within Chapter 48 standards, ordinances, and policies. Interns work at community events, participate in treatment courts, and experience Access, Initial Assessment, Ongoing Services, and Foster Care Services. Job shadowing in all areas of Child Welfare is available.
Child Welfare Master Level Internships: For master of social work degrees, focused on Initial Assessment and Ongoing Services, and eventually handling a Child Welfare case and implementing services. Research of policies and best practice data may be assigned. Job shadowing in all areas of Child Welfare is available.
Youth Justice Bachelor Level Internships: For social work, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology degrees, focusing on youth justice services within Wisconsin Chapter 938 standards, ordinances, and policies. Job shadowing in Youth Justice is part of this internship.
Veterans
Veterans Service Office Internships: For Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Social Work candidates, learning about Federal and State Veterans Benefits navigation, counseling individuals on eligibility for programs, and interacting with Veterans and their beneficiaries to determine individual needs and available programs.
BHU Behavioral Health Internships: For a broad range of social service degrees, providing resources and support for those with mental health needs. Interns assist mental health professionals with teaching coping skills, symptom management, and risk assessments.
Behavioral Health Case Management Internships: For students pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Services, providing a variety of mental health services in the community and community settings. Licensed clinicians provide clinical supervision and meet educational program requirements.
Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic Internships: For students pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Services, providing mental health services in an outpatient setting. Licensed clinicians provide clinical supervision and meet educational program requirements.
Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Internships: For students with a minimum of 500 hours, or a Master’s degree in Social Services, providing mental health services in the community. Licensed clinicians provide clinical supervision and meet educational program requirements.

WISCONSIN RETIREMENT: Employees expected to work less than 1200 hours per year will not receive this benefit. If an employee works 1200 hours, is employed for at least one year, and is not under 20 attending high school full-time. The employee will be expected to pay the employee portion.
