Health Assistant
Primary Purpose
Assist with vision and hearing screening and related tasks, such as recording results.
Weigh and measure students.
Aid in preparation for health activities, such as screenings, immunizations, and so forth.
Administer medications and treatments as delegated by the school nurse, after receiving the required training.
Report major health concerns to the supervising school nurse and/or school administrator within appropriate time limits.
Provide first aid care to students with minor injuries.
Follow guidelines contained in First Aid Flipchart for School Emergencies.
Report all illnesses and injuries to the school nurse for professional review, care, and/or follow-up.
Contact parents of ill or injured children.
Maintain Confidentiality
Maintain a clean, orderly, and attractive health office/clinic.
Record Health Information
Maintain an up-to-date master file of student health emergency information and so forth.
Provide ongoing communication to the school nurse regarding the status of health notices.
Distribute information, forms, and so forth, to teachers and administrative staff.
Develop Computer Skills
Initiate and distribute incident and accident reports according to school Division policy.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited program of nursing
- Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse preferred or a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia Board of Nursing preferred
- Two (2) years successful work experience and experience in community health, pediatrics, emergency care and triage, psychiatry, and/or a physician's office preferred
