About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Health and Safety Specialist to join our Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Division. This role supports industrial hygiene and safety services, chemical/hazardous materials management, and waste management functions critical to SLAC’s scientific research and operational mission.

Responsibilities

  • Manage several ES&H programs, including administering, assessing, and improving them, and serving as a subject matter expert. Programs may include asbestos, beryllium, lead, silica, cryogens/cryogenic equipment, chemical exposure assessments, fume hoods, compressed/hazardous/toxic gases, noise/hearing conservation, non-ionizing radiation, and respiratory protection.
  • Support projects (project planning documentation and specifications) to ensure compliance with safety requirements while enabling the team to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver safety training for managed programs (e.g., asbestos, lead, or other industrial hygiene topics).
  • Perform workplace hazard assessments, monitor hazards, and develop mitigations; support incident investigations and provide technical advice on regulations.
  • Collaborate with staff at all levels, including technicians, principal investigators, and operational support teams.
  • Perform moderately complex technical work in environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and regulatory compliance.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (chemical, physical, biological, radiological) and recommend improvements to minimize risks.
  • Provide technical advice and interpret government regulations and SLAC policies; maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the transfer of an existing asbestos database to a new platform.
  • Core duties include developing and maintaining safety programs, conducting training, investigating incidents, and recommending process improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of progressively responsible experience in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, or an allied/scientific field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Practical knowledge of Cal/OSHA laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to identify potential exposures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct health and safety surveys, exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses, and provide recommendations via technical reports.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Ability to interpret government regulations and university policies and maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Working knowledge of scientific and technical aspects of regulatory requirements and their impact on assigned work areas.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in industrial hygiene, asbestos program management, lead program management, IH sampling, or familiarity with ASTM E2356-18 Standard Practice for Comprehensive Building Asbestos Surveys.
  • Experience in an academic or laboratory research environment.
  • Active pursuit or possession of professional certifications, such as:
    • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • AHERA certifications (Asbestos)
    • CADPH Lead Inspector/Assessor or Project Monitor

Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License. Ability to drive day and night and comply with California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements when conducting university business.
