Header Sub Arc Welding
The Role
Welds metal parts together to fabricate products using the submerged arc welding process.
Responsibilities
- Ability to position header at machine clamping using an overhead or jib crane; turn cranks or pushes buttons to align electrode on welding head over the weld joint.
- Ability to load reel of electrode wire onto machine and threads electrode wire from reel through feed rolls and welding head; turn welding head to set the specified angle of electrode.
- Fills hopper with specified flux and directs nozzle or gravity feed over weld line.
- Turns knobs to set current, voltage, and slope, and synchronizes feed of wire and flux with speed of welding action.
- Observes meters and gauges along with observing the weld action for compliance with procedures.
- Visually examines welds for adherence to specifications; grinds welded surfaces as needed.
- Operates pneumatic and electric grinders.
- Uses and utilizes levels.
- Adjusts machine setup to vary size, location, and penetration of bead; lays out, fits, and tacks work pieces together.
- Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace; removes surplus slag, flux, and spatter.
- Removes metal with carbon arc gouger to make repairs if necessary.
- Maintains production record of parts and jobs fabricated as required by the Department Manager.
- Regular attendance, ability to arrive at work punctually, ability to work on-site, ability to work overtime.
- Able to work cooperatively with others, able to deal respectfully with the public, customers, vendors, other employees, managers, and executive management.
- Able to perform multiple tasks concurrently, able to work in a fast-paced environment, able to interchange with others in the department.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must pass American Society of Mechanical Engineering 1g Saw Plate Test.
Skills
- Submerged arc welding proficiency.
- Manual handling and assembly skills.
- Use of various tools and equipment (grinders, levels, etc.).
- Visual inspection and quality control.
- Interpersonal and teamwork skills.
