Head Teacher - After School Program
About This Role
Leila Day is in search of a creative, organized, art fluent, nature based educator for our After School Program. Lead teachers are responsible for cultivating an environment of creativity, curiosity, exploration, and joy while supporting the emergent ideas of young children and helping them grow, learn and have fun.
What You'll Do
- Help children problem-solve through play
- Express themselves through language, print, art, and multiple sign systems
- Nurture a joyful appreciation for one’s bodily self
- Support ethical values and emotional intelligence
- Develop multi-cultural literacies and cultural dignity
- Foster authentic connections with the natural world
- Take children on outdoor adventures at least three times a week
- Organize weekly art projects
- Lead and/or co-lead their team
- Maintain an orderly classroom
- Use the environment as another “teacher”
- Communicate with parents
- Complete necessary paperwork
- Collaborate with the administration and other staff
Requirements
- Experience in outdoor education with this or a similar age group
- A willingness to spend time with children outdoors and in the woods
- A commitment to learn more about outdoor education and the educational philosophy and pedagogy of Leila Day
- The ability to physically keep up with a rambunctious group of 6-11 year olds
- The ability to work cooperatively with the head teacher to further the goals of the afterschool program

In operation since 1878, this celebrated program's mission is to foster children's social, emotional, intellectual and physical development within a warm and nurturing environment built on sound principles of child development. Leila Day emphasizes nature and outdoor education. The children and teachers spend time learning outside every day.
Pay
Salary is dependent upon experience and education.
Schedule
Hours are 2:30-5:30, with additional subbing hours during the school day, if interested.
