POSITION SUMMARY
Supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Builds members and the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact.
About the role
Head Swim Instructor assists Aquatic Director with scheduling, onloading and in-service for swim instructors, deck support, family and class communications and general admin support related to swimming lessons. Instructs classes in a safe, enjoyable, culturally aware, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests.
- Exemplifies the Y’s commitment to the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility and responds to all members and community inquiries in a timely manner.
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- Congveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers to program participants and families to other programs.
- Aids Aquatics Director in overseeing Swim Lesson scheduling and backup lesson coverage.
- Aids Aquatics Director in training and supervising Swim Lessons and staff.
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report).
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Assumes oversight of the Aquatics Center and staff in the absence of the Aquatics Director.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18.
- Ability to perform duties with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness, empathy, care, honesty, and respect.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen. Currently YMCA certified Swim Instructor, YMCA Water Safety instructor. The YMCA will assist with the above training to be achieved within the first year of employment.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- 3+ years of experience in teaching Swim Lessons.
- 1+ year of experience teaching Youth.
- Hold a YSL Trainer Certification.
- Hold certifications pertaining to working with Youth.
