About the role
Under the direction and supervision of the YMCA Director, and in consultation with the Swim Team Parents Association, the Head Coach will direct, administer, and manage the Raritan Valley YMCA Swim Team and related programs. Direction shall be consistent with guidelines as established in the Association’s Physical Education Policy, YMCA Sports Philosophy, and National Rules that govern YMCA sports. The Competitive Swim Team consists of 200–250 swimmers ages 5 to 19. The team also holds events which may be open to non-team members (including spring workouts, summer workouts, team tryouts).
Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model for children, parents and other staff members at all times by promoting the YMCA mission and values.
- Staff members will set good examples by exhibiting personal habits, health, dress, speech, etiquette and relationships that serve as beneficial models to team members.
- Administer policies, procedures, administrative functions, swimmer registrations, meets, payroll, promotion and recruitment.
- Responsible for coaching, training, and conditioning of team members and staff.
- Responsible for supervision and directing of any team-related developmental programs including clinics and feeder classes.
- Instill sportsmanship, loyalty to the group, willingness to work hard, and courteous and respectful behaviors.
- Work and communicate with the Swim Team Parents Association and Swim Team Parents Association Executive Board.
- Maintain communications with team member parents and guardians regarding parent requirements, scheduling, team goals, and other appropriate communications.
- Communicate with YMCA and USA Swimming representatives, as well as coaches and representatives of other swim teams, on behalf of the Team.
- Responsible for hiring, certification, development, job description, and supervision of Coaches and Associate Head Coaches.
Qualifications
- Prior experience coaching children in competitive environment.
- Working knowledge of a Competitive Swim Team and experience as a coach or swimmer.
- Experience in working with volunteers and other professionals.
- Ability to establish and maintain necessary relationships with coaches and other YMCA staff, team parents, YMCA members, and the general public.
- Warm and friendly personality, sensitivity toward the feelings and needs of others, maturity, flexibility, good time management and organizational skills and be able to relate well to, and communicate with, children and adolescents.
- Necessary training and experience to coach swimming.
- Lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certificates.
- Valid background check on file with USA Swimming.
- Ability to interpret and display proper values concepts.
